Introducing our next athlete, George Gates

Although George is relatively new to the group, he is no stranger to the sport. Throughout his 11 years of running, George has run many distances, but says his favorite is the half marathon because it’s long enough to be a challenge without the training cycle taking up all your time. He also feels that with a half marathon, he can settle in around 6-7 miles and then run a strong second half.

George’s favorite race is Mind the Ducks, a 12-hour endurance run on a 1.01 mile loop. While training for this run, he ran multiple marathons by doing loops in his neighborhood. His diligent training allowed him to break 50 miles before turning 50 years old, his biggest accomplishment, yet! George says that he went through all the emotions during those 12 hours and that it was the only time he’s cried during a race; not from pain but from the reflection on what it took to get there and everyone’s accomplishments of the day.

While George has taken some time off, he’s now back at it with the goal of being more consistent with his running, and what better way to ensure consistency than to begin training for an event?! You can catch George training the Shipyard Half, where he’s sure to celebrate his finish with a burger, fries, and a chocolate milkshake!
